La fuerza fue tal que varios edificios colapsaron casi al instante, mientras que muchas personas que se encontraban afuera terminaron en el suelo por la intensa sacudida que recibieron. El saldo oficial de fallecidos supera los 1,400, más de 4,000 heridos y la ONU estima hasta 50 mil desaparecidos.
